This is a tough one to answer bill without knowing the entire history of the injury - for example the direction of the herniation. If it is a posterior herniation then the flexed spine position most hockey players have when they play will put more stress on that disc.

I would consult with an experienced sport physio who works with hockey players. Basically it depends on the risk/reward. Does the risk of going through a major episode of back pain - potentially very serious outweigh the benefits you get from playing hockey. Disc injuries can be managed and athletes who have had disc injuries do play.

My advice - get an expert opinion based on your individual case. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Cheers,
Maria

How would you assess, in terms of to play or not to play, a
large bulging disc (L4/L5) which, following extended acupuncture treatment, no longer gives pain.
( "casual" hockey )
Very much appreciate your comments
thanks
