Off-Ice Goalie Training Q&A

goalie training q&aWow – what a weekend.  We had some great snow over the weekend here – actually got to shovel the driveway.  Today it is sunny and clear, just a great winter day.  My brother Pete and I were over at my parents house trying to get it cleaned out to put on the market in the next week or so.  Since the loss of my Dad in the summer, my Mom has moved to an apartment so Pete and I are busy sorting through almost 50 years worth of photos, finger paintings, memories and ‘I have no idea what this even is’.  You get the idea – picture 4 pick up truck loads to GoodWill and the recycling depot.

The weekend finished with a very nervous 10-minutes as we watched to see if Team Revolution athletes Virtue and Moir would win the Four Continents Figure Skating Championship in a head-to-head duel against the reigning World Champions from the USA.  I could not find it streaming online anywhere, so we just kept hitting ‘Refresh’ on the page where they had live updates of the results.  The  Americans skated last – so Scott and Tessa were in first, but the Americans still had a chance to beat them.  “Refresh” – Virtue & Moir – overall place – 1.  A great victory for these two.

Then Andy McDonald return to the ice for the St. Louis Blues after missing almost four months with a concussion.  Andy logged about 16-minutes of ice time and got an assist on the first goal.  I know he is thrilled to be back and I am sure the team is happy to have him as them make the final push to the play-offs.

Okay – on to the task at hand.  Time for another installment of…

Off-Ice Goalie Training Q&A – Part 1

This one got so long that I decided to split it into two.  Today I will answer goalie training questions about…

  • medicine ball exercises
  • I want to do UGT 2.0 because I am very competitive – but I am also super busy – what should I do?
  • starting your hockey/goaltending career later in life

In Part 2 of Goalie Training Q&A coming later this week I will answer questions about…

  • Ever heard of Peak 8 Training?  Does it work?
  • I don’t feel I have the energy to move powerfully – what should I do?
  • What do goalie specific training programs include that you do not find in p90X?

  • what do goalie specific training programs have that p90X does not have?

    hey M!

well great answers…i suddenlly got a question, cruches ar so bad why people and trainers keep doing them.
i got very happy today ’cause some one that i teached your abs circuit told me that now she can do it more easy and i watch her as she was doing the elbow soup in the stabillity ball and she did improve!
to the goalie starting…go to your training sesion as a goalie and try and do all the skating drills at top speed. goalies now a days have to be able to skate pas and even shoot sometimes. keep on trainig and folowing maria’s advice!

    Maria,
Dilemma solved! Great to hear my question on your video, as well as the expanded answer. Hope it helps others as well. And thanks for your continuing advice on what not to do–I was circuit training, and we were doing leg sleds, Russian twists, crunches, and I’m sure a few others on your “do not do” list. I would have had no idea those were bad but for your advice. Keep it up! I agree with you on the goaltending newcomer–get goal skates, and find a coach to get you working on fundamental movements. It is much easier to create good habits than to try to get rid of bad habits once ingrained.
    Cheers,
    Paul

    Keep it up!
